From Booklist
Weems' son was pointlessly killed "less than an hour after his twenty-first birthday." Her grief has not left her since. She released much of it, however, in these 50 poems. Modeled upon the Psalms of the Bible, they all share the same "plot line" --beginning in painful petition, proceeding through anger and helplessness, and concluding in trust in the Lord who brings all hope. They are repetitious in their tropes as well. The lines of each are centered on the page, thereby resonantly recalling the shaped poems of the English sacred poet George Herbert (the most famous are "Easter Wings" and "The Altar" ). Weems' poems are not as great as Herbert's, but virtually anyone of religious faith who has lost a loved one, especially "before their time," will find fellowship, ministry, and healing in them. Ray Olson

About the Author

of great benefit to grieving parents

all i can tell you of this book is my mother credits a large percentage of her still being on this planet after the death of her 16 year old daughter in a car accident to the insights in this book of poetry--it is a series of poems about the loss of her son, mostly written as appeals to god, and it certainly brings the reader face to face with their anger and sadness, so they can move on and face the future with a little less hopelessness.

Psalms of Lament
By Patricia C. Chavez
When my son was killed in an auto/pedestrian accident two years ago, I read books that were given to me, books that were recommended by therapists, and books that I randomly bought in search of any source of solace. Ann Weem's "Psalms of Lament" spoke the words my heart has been crying. Especially Lament Psalm Forty-Nine. Like Ann and Rachel, I will never be comforted; until God wipes the tears from my eyes.

This book offers a unique pathway to methods of parallel optimization by introducing parallel computing ideas into both optimization theory and into some numerical algorithms for large-scale optimization problems. The three parts of the book bring together relevant theory, careful study of algorithms, and modeling of significant real world problems such as image reconstruction, radiation therapy treatment planning, financial planning, transportation and multi-commodity network flow problems, planning under uncertainty, and matrix balancing problems.

Review

"This book presents a domain that arises where two different branches of science, namely parallel computations and the theory of constrained optimization, intersect with real life problems. This domain, called parallel optimization, has been developing rapidly under the stimulus of progress in computer technology. The book focuses on parallel optimization methods for large-scale constrained optimization problems and structured linear problems. . . . [It] covers a vast portion of parallel optimization, though full coverage of this domain, as the authors admit, goes far beyond the capacity of a single monograph. This book, however, in over 500 pages brings an excellent and in-depth presentation of all the major aspects of a process which matches theory and methods of optimization with modern computers. The volume can be recommended for graduate students, faculty, and researchers in any of those fields."--Mathematical Reviews

For the dedicated specialist
By wiredweird
This book is highly mathematical. It phrases its points as a series of theorems, with a number of case studies at the end. The theorems all stop just short legible technique. The examples, though exciting, all presuppose command of technique. I regret that I never found that missing piece within myself. That piece was the one that connects deep theorems about abstract N-dimensional pseudodistances into working fluency about CAT scans.
I did, however, get some understanding of the kinds of problems that the authors address. They are some of the analytic functions, with linear or nonlinear constraints. In particular, they are functions of high dimensions - thousands or millions of constraints - amenable to fairly fine-grained optimization. They are not discrete problems, like the Travelling Salesman. They are not problems with hugely jagged reward surfaces, like "motif finding" problems in bioinformatics. They are not genetic algorithms, Monte Carlo searches, or combinatorial problems. The authors do in fact parallelize a number of important optimization problems, including CAT scans, transportation planning, and radiation therapy, but not all optimization techniques.
Those problems span only a small part of the parallelizable world. The broad promise in the title "Parallel Optimization" was only partly kept. Some parallelization techniques were presented, as well as some interesting perspetives on numerical optimization. Optimization is a large field, however, and this is only a small map.
Still, for that range of problems, it seems to offer the right reader profound insight. I can not be sure, though, since I'm not the right reader. I give it three stars, just because I had to give something. Different people will assign this book very different value.

Proximal point algorithms by Censor and Zenios
By Julio Michael Stern
Part I of this book starts with an aphorism,
attributed to H. von Helmholtz:
``The most practical thing in the world
is a good theory.''
The book does justice to von Helmholtz maxim.
The theory of Bregman distances is presented
in a clear, geometrical and intuitive way.
Part II of the book presents several important
and illustrative applications of Proximal Point
algorithms, to constrained optimization,
Maximum Entropy problems, financial stochastic
networks, and several other important areas.

From Publishers Weekly
Cataloguing half a century of Israeli intelligence's triumphs, debacles and infighting, this dense work will be of most use to specialists.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
This just may turn out to be the definitive work on the Jewish state's highly touted and often emulated intelligence operations. The authors have crafted a comprehensive and very readable guide to the labyrinthine history of Israel's efforts to spy on its Arab, Palestinian, European, American, and global neighbors from the 1930s to the present. Their ability to provide such encyclopedic coverage is bolstered by access to previously classified and unavailable diaries, reports, and documents. While Dan Raviv and Yossi Melman's Every Spy a Prince ( LJ 7/90) and Victor Ostrovsky and Claire Hoy's By Way of Deception ( LJ 11/15/90) cover this same topic and are worth reading, the first suffers from a tendency to preach about Israeli ethics and the latter is a very personal accounting of spycraft without much historical coverage. Secret Wars avoids these faults and is a "must buy" for any library with any size collection in the area.

A must read for student's of the intelligence industry and it's players.
By M. Conrad Hunter
For students of the history and evolution of intelligence and it's major players, ISRAEL'S SECRET WARS is one of the best comprehensive surveys of the subject available. Messer's. Black and Morris provide a balanced, thoughtfully researched, and well-written account of the complex world of intelligence operations.

The concluding points taken are poignant, and pithy.

o Israel has consistently been good at human intelligence, the oldest form of spycraft, which remains, despite sophisticated surveillance satellites, computer cryptanalysis and the other vast technological advances of recent years, the best way to find out what an enemy is doing, thinking and planning.

o The classic ideological spy, motivated by a belief in the system of his country's enemy, does not exist in the Middle East conflict. There are no closet Arab Zionists, no Syrian, Iraqi, Egyptian or Palestinian Kim Philbys who believe that the transformation of Palestine into Israel, the dispossession and partial exile of an Arab people, is a good and positive thing.

o Ingenuity, ruthlessness and dishonesty have played their part in this history, as they have done, and continue to do, to a greater or lesser degree, in the work of all intelligence and security services everywhere.

o Israel's secret services have always gone far beyond the traditional tasks of espionage and counter-espionage. Early operational versatility - was carried over {from the British}into the years of independence.

o Obtaining weapons and advanced technologies secretly, and often illegally, and denying them to enemies remain a preoccupation.

o Using the media to disseminate stories and warnings that help Israeli operations and undermine the country's enemies has long been a speciality.

History of Israeli Intelligence is somewhat dated
By David W. Nicholas
Israel was spying on its Arab neighbors before it even formally existed, and has been doing it ever since. Back when the Haganah was battling the irregular Arab insurgents in the period of the British Mandate, warning of when those insurgents were going to attack, and where, was almost required. Fortunately, various Israelis who had lived among the Arabs and spoke their language were able to infiltrate those Arab groups, or suborn members of them, and gain the needed information.
When the War of Independance was won, the Israeli intelligence network settled into three different services: the Mossad, for external intelligence, the Shin Bet, for internal security, and the Aman, for military intelligence. This book covers all three in about equal measure, with digressions for other services like the small research unit that employed Jonathan Pollard, for instance. Much of the story remains classified, and is therefore either murky or just incomplete, or even unknown and not repeated here at all.
There's a scene in the movie Gettysburg where a Confederate spy named Harrison (played by the actor Cooper Huckabee) complains to his employer, Confederate General James Longstreet (Tom Berenger). Harrison had been an actor before the war, and he doesn't like spying because if you do it well, no one knows. It's only when you screw up that you get noticed. The same thing is true in the case of this book: especially in the last chapters, the story is a chronicle of the times the organization was in the news, and a spy organization like the Mossad or Shin Bet does its best to stay out of the headlines. When they fail, it's usually because of something they did wrong, or something they tried that failed. It would have been interesting to read about some of their successes too.
There is one further thing that I should register in the way of negativity. This isn't exactly a criticism, but it definitely detracts from the value of the book. Since the book was published in 1991, it's very dated, and could stand an update, if either or both of the authors would be able. I'm sure that some of the uncertainties of the late 80's in the book have been resolved, and it would be interesting to have the book continued into the 90s and beyond. Until that book comes out, this one is worthwhile, notwithstanding that it's more than a decade old.

The Dark Side of Statecraft
By Eric Maroney
In Israel's Secret Wars Ian Black and Benny Morris explore the "secret" wars Israel fought against its Arab and Palestinian foes from the pre-state institutions of the Yishuv to 1990. They begin with the earliest manifestations of an intelligence service in the attempts of the Jewish Agency's Arab Department, following the Arab revolt of the 1930s, to keep files on Arab affairs. These note cards stored in a file cabinets became the cornerstone of Israel's espionage industry. With the founding of the state, Black and Morris take us through the evolution of these cards into the Mossad (the equivalent of the CIA) and the Shin Bet (roughly equivalent to the FBI) and their challenges in the Sinai Campaign of 1956, the Six Days War of 1967, occupation of Gaza and the West Bank, the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the struggle against Palestinian terrorism in the 1970s, both in Israel and abroad, and the Intifada in the late 80s. The book is seemingly exhaustive in its use of available sources, is well written and generally non-judgmental, keeping its conclusions close to the "facts." Overall it is the kind of scholarship we have come to expect from a first class historian like Benny Morris.

Art of the Northern Renaissance in historical context
By bill-g
Informative, smart and well-written, Craig Harbison's "The Mirror of the Artist" provides an excellent, brief introduction to the sensibility, historical context, and practice of art in the North. From the attitude toward realism, to patronage among the growing class of government bureaucrats, to the market for art or the influence of the Reformation, the book offers an enhanced understanding of artistic interest and social situations in which the paintings were made -- without ever forgetting their aesthetic dimension. The best tribute I can offer is that I immediately went back to Amazon to order Harbison's "Jan Van Eyck: The Play of Realism", a $35 large format paperback. Minor quibble: Although well-illustrated for a paperback this size, with the book just about 6.25" x 9.5", more details should have been illustrated when details were discussed in larger works. (I'm still looking for the barely visible figure of the devil above the cow in the "Portinari Altarpiece".) But this is a rare problem.

An exciting survey
By James D. Ahrens
I've loved the art of this period for years, but had little academic grounding in it. This book lets me return to old favorites with new eyes.
This, in common with other volumes in the "Perspectives" series, offers high quality (though small) reproductions of important works, up-to-date analysis and discussion of the art and the contexts in which it was created. Harbison's tone is informative, if ocasionally a little too sententious. But it's a very small price to pay, given the overall excellence of his work in this volume. It's obvious that Harbison loves this period, and he transmits his excitement for these works to the reader in concise language that is accessible to a lay audience.
Of particular interest is the discussion of how the Northern Rennaisance related to and differed from what was going on in Italy at the time. The only major weakness: not enough of a focus on Durer. But it's hard to get sufficient focus on any artist in a book this condensed.
An excellent book for those familiar with the period, or those wanting to get acquainted with a school of art often unjustly overshadowed by its southern contemporary.

A cut above
By A reader from Canada
I read this story as it was being posted on Meljean's site. I was one of the readers who'd been waiting for Frozen for ages, unaware of her struggles in finishing it, and loved the way we got to experience the writing process through her chapter posts and 'blogs of shame'. Once it was finished I promptly bought a Kindle copy and re-read it.

This story is not set in any of Meljean's other worlds, so is a great introduction to her work for those unfamiliar with the Iron Seas or Guardian series (which are both must-reads, in my opinion). It doesn't have the depth of world building one typically sees in her work (and she is totally up front about this), but that wouldn't have worked with the novella format anyway. The story takes place over a couple of days and focuses almost exclusively on two characters: Eric Gulbrandr and Olivia Martin, who are colleagues with a History. She arrives at Eric's cabin with papers to sign hours before a snowstorm is due to hit. Eric, plagued by demons both intangible (a curse) and literal ('moon hounds'), is NOT happy to see her. Thrills ensue.

Although the story is a supernatural romance, because it is a supernatural romance by Meljean Brook there are some interesting philosophical questions at its heart, especially about the nature of will and choice. What if you are impelled (or compelled) to do something that you would otherwise want regardless? How does that change things? I highly recommend this book if you're looking for an entertaining and exceedingly well-written (and well-priced!) read that is a cut above your typical supernatural romance.

The gnashing of teeth froze me out of enjoying this book
By Jwes
I was totally irritated by this book and ended up paging through to the end. As another reviewer said, it went on way too long. And there was far too much inner exposition by the heroine gnashing her teeth the entire time. If the author had written about the lump (ice) blocking her throat or surrounding her heart one more time, I was going to scream. And, in fact, there was a simple solution to their conundrum that they both wanted. Just get on with it already! I'm giving this two stars instead of one because at least it was edited and not full of typos.

4.5 stars - Icy control plus cursed desire - Frozen ends up hot and sweet while skirting the edge of darkness
By melindeeloo
Erik has frozen Olivia out since their one passionate kiss. Despite the cracks in her heart from his icy civility, Erik still stars in her hottest fantasies. When Olivia is sent on an errand to Erik's doorstep, she expects his usual cool response but instead receives a much worse greeting. And when she is unable to make the hasty retreat that his reaction inspires, and is instead forced by circumstances to remain with Erik, Olivia will discover the reason for the walls of ice he's built between them and just what is going to happen to her when they fall.

First off I have to say that I love the real back cover blurb for Frozen to the bottom of my 'pun-ish' heart.

Frozen, which is the long awaited by me standalone story that Brook finally finished by offering it in installments on her blog, is a bit different from her other paranormal romances (and her steampunk ones too) in that the worldbuilding is minimal with just a dab of Norse myth and a curse as the foundation, and also different in that the story is told from the heroine's first person POV - not knowing what the hero is feeling is key to the story because it gives a different spin on the old mate bond trope.

I loved both of the leads. The cursed Erik, as he struggles to control the curse, is noble and the glimpses into his anguish for what it will make him do, and how it will cost him the normal things that he wants, make him vulnerable and appealing even as he can only see himself as a monster. And the leading lady, Olivia, is resourceful and smart, trying to find a better outcome to what seems like a no win scenario for Erik and trying to fight her fear by arming herself with knowledge so she can figure out the real parameters of the curse.

And I liked that even though the time frame of the story is short, the combination of the pair's backstory and that - while they are both essentially under seige by Erik's enemies and waiting for the curse to strike - there are enough normal moments and touches of humor that we get a glimpse of what the true dynamic of their relationship could be. If I had a nit with the story it would be that both characters' decisions about the other's feelings are a cause of some of their problems, but it is a short story and, hey, they do need more than just a measly old thousands of years old curse, a couple of homicidal enemies, and that pesky old mate bond standing in the way of their HEA.

So the bottom line is that I really liked Frozen both of the times I read it - first when anxiously waiting for the next installment to appear on Brook's blog and this second time when I finally had the whole thing in my greedy little hands - and for a story that had the potential to go someplace dark, the ending is really sweet.

Original aphorisms so good that you'll think they're from from some dead wise man
By Cliff Styles
I was lucky enough to encounter Aaron Haspel’s writing early in his career as an aphorist, and he opened my attention to a Pandora’s box-car of wit and bludgeon; this book is the first collection from years of his own work, the only quoted material is an occasional one-liner initiating a chapter.

From my yet insufficient travels among the aphorists, it seems to me that an average aphorist will gently shake or pleasantly confirm your comfy self-delusions, a good aphorist will upset your equilibrium with some sharp exposition from a worldview probably truer than your own, but a great aphorist will write pointed and inescapable truths as many personas in many arenas and often slip in a disturbing uncertainty alongside some fresh and painful truth.

Aaron Haspel is with the greats.

‘Examples!?!’, I hear you cry? Fine, here you go, pilgrim.

At one time or another, Mr Haspel sounds like:

Eric Hoffer writing about the world from the docks - “One of truth’s greatest enemies is collegiality”; “Anything can be conjured into existence by empowering a committee to suppress it”;

Rodney Dangerfield delivering a one liner - “An electronic device that tracked your location at all times used to be a condition of parole”;

A ruthless agony aunt telling you to buck up and face the music - “It is impossible to recognize your betters until you acknowledge that they exist”;

A crusader against self-deception - “To hate something properly you must have liked it once”; “We are such accomplished liars because we get so much practice on ourselves”;

A modern zen master - “Taxes, regarded as the price of indifference, are a bargain”;

Diogenes delivering smack - “Every logical fallacy is also a valid heuristic”;

Sometimes even a surprising and friendly uncle - “You attenuate your strengths by too assiduously correcting your defects”;

and, finally, Cassandra warning of doom - the last item in the book will give you a chill, as will many others, but you’ll have to buy the book to read it, I’m not giving it away. The above are not even his best, by the way, read the book to discover them.

Among many uses, you can exploit this book as a self-help manual. How? By fighting with Haspel, or if you insist, agreeing with him. One seduction an apt aphorism incites is that gratifyingly instantaneous Yes!! or No!!!, but the real profit is from a slow hunt for examples on your own, and from the dawning revelation of the Big Question that is slipped in alongside the seemingly self-evident. So fight with Haspel, he’ll often win or at least give you a good pummeling, but keep in mind this excellent Haspel admonition: “There are few experiences as salutary as losing an argument, but only if you notice”.

This book does the opposite of the modern publishing so given to inflating 5 cent magazine articles into 25 buck hardcovers: Haspel condenses his lifelong study and rumination into point and pith, and after gulping in a dozen Haspelisms, you’ll be stuffed to the intellectual gills, and need a lie-down to digest them, or a rant and google against his ‘obvious’ errors, or a quiet bar in which to mutter and stew in your chagrin.

The downside is that Haspel will make you less receptive to the pleasant bloviations that feed anodyne distraction to your head, from others or from yourself, while the upside will be that he’ll provide you with a sharp memory stick with which to puncture those bloviations when you tire of them. Haspel’s shorter, and better, version: “We remember what we believe, and believe what we remember.”. You’ll quote him from memory, not always exactly but still aptly, as I have.

Oh yes, and he’ll amuse you, though it’s amusement with a frisson of anxiety from suspecting that your soul is painted on his bullseye. He has, by the way, no inhibition or prohibition against pinning himself on that target.

The book’s a steal at this price, so pay the pittance and take a kiss from the abyss; you’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, you’ll put yourself ahead of the crowd, you’ll wise up, you’ll improve your cocktail conversation, and you’ll be a better man. How many writers have ever done as much for you?

Sticks and Stones may Break your Bones, but Haspel Draws Blood.
By John Faithful Hamer
In a letter to a friend, Nietzsche maintained that the only readers who could really claim to have understood his Zarathustra (1891) were those who were, at times, profoundly wounded by it. I couldn’t help but think of this remark as I read Everything (2015). Although this book is quite short and extraordinarily clear, it’s not an easy read. Far from it actually. Haspel says that he asks but “one thing of literature: that it draw blood.” And he delivers on this score, again and again, with aphorisms like the following: (i) “Whatever you think you like — are you sure you like it? Or do you like being the sort of person who likes it?” (ii) “Whatever you have done, you are the sort of person who would do that.” (iii) “It never seems to occur to the teacher who complains of inattentive students that he may not be worth attending to.” (iv) “If you want to destroy your marriage talk about it.”

But these are only some of the most obviously challenging aphorisms contained in this volume. The more insidious ones are like time-bombs or retroviruses: I rarely “get” them the first time I read them. Don’t even necessarily get them when I’m reading them. Instead, something happens or someone says something, days or even weeks later, and a bell goes off in my head and I think “a-ha”—that’s what he meant! For instance, this aphorism (which I posted the other day on Facebook) is loved at first for almost all of the wrong reasons: “If it has never crossed your mind that you might be stupid, you are.” People who’ve been (like me), at times, painfully aware of their inadequacy, read this and feel smart. Until, that is, they realize, a few days or weeks later, that although failing the aphorism’s test proves that you’re stupid, passing it doesn’t prove that you’re smart. A week or two later, however, it gets worse: the self-congratulatory glow loses all of what’s left of its luster when you realize that you can be stupid and know you’re stupid.

Some of Haspel’s aphorisms are laugh-out-loud funny, such as: (i) “Passion, n. An overwhelming urge to spend your life at something you don’t do especially well.” (ii) “The ideal work environment for a writer is jail.” (iii) “Blaming an actor for being a narcissist is like blaming a tiger for being a carnivore.” (iv) It is when we recognize our hopeless inadequacy at everything else that we discover our vocation.” And some of them are straightforwardly brilliant, such as this one, which is, to my mind, the best summary of the Socratic way of life I have ever read: “A grudging willingness to admit error does not suffice; you have to cultivate a taste for it.”

Still, if you’re looking for the kind of writer beloved of avid readers of The New Yorker—the kind who knows how to make his educated liberal audience feel superior to all of those yahoos in the sticks who hunt, pray, vote Republican, and believe in weird stuff—don’t buy this book. Seriously, don’t. Because you’ll hate it. Haspel holds up a mirror, and, trust me, you’re not going to like everything you see. I know I didn’t. If Haspel has an overarching message that he wants to impart it’s that we’re not exempt from the follies of our day, even (and perhaps especially) when we think we are: “We are more like our contemporaries than we imagine, and less like our ancestors.”

I read a great deal (probably more than I should), and I’ve been a great lover of the aphoristic genre for over twenty years. Yet never before have I encountered so many aphorisms written by a contemporary of such a high quality: Haspel is in a league of his own. At his best, Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s aphorisms in The Bed of Procrustes (2010) rival those of Epicurus (e.g., “Love without sacrifice is like theft” is something I wish I had written). But my fellow Canadian, George Murray, probably deserves the prize for second place. His most recent collection of aphorisms, Glimpse (2010), is often outstanding (e.g., “Rubble becomes ruin when the tourists arrive”). Even so, the collection is scandalously uneven, and it really doesn’t hold a candle to Everything. To wit: Aaron Haspel is the greatest master of the aphoristic form writing in English today. It’s always hard to know which books will stand the test of time, which books will be read 300 years from now. But if I was a betting man, I’d bet on Everything.

More than very good.
By Jean-Louis Rheault
using one of his own aphorism about art, I would say It is one of those rare pieces of writing that reads us and finds us wanting.
