A key theme of West’s research into sorcery is that one sorcerer’s claims can be challenged or reversed by other sorcerers. After West’s attempt to construct a metaphorical interpretation of Muedan assertions that the lions prowling their villages are fabricated by sorcerers is disputed by his Muedan research collaborators, West realized that ethnography and sorcery indeed have much in common. Rather than abandoning ethnography, West draws inspiration from this connection, arguing that anthropologists, along with the people they study, can scarcely avoid interpreting the world they inhabit, and that we are all, inescapably, ethnographic sorcerers.

Excellent read. Recommended.

This is a short yet thought provoking anthropological analysis of sorcery among the Muedan people of Mozambique. The book, however, is not a case study on the Muedans, rather West uses his experience with the Muedans to illustrate anthropological theory. The book is written in the conversational tone that is characteristic of modern anthropological style. Although the book, including notes, is only 110 pp. long, the list of academic references cited in the book is 16 pp., which attests to West’s ambition to present a concise yet rigorous treatment of sorcery. He achieves these ambitions.

really good discussion of both subject and its ontology

What an insight: ethnography itself is a form of sorcery. These cultures seem to be applying the Observer principle from Quantum Mechanics, at a human level. I like this book. Other people say what they say. I like reviews that mention similar books, at least books on the same path, so I do that. I do so love Anthropology. If you want to go further with diversity of what is possible, even just in America, Urban Shaman, The Future Is Yours: Do Something About It!, Lost Secrets of Ancient Hawaiian Huna, Volume 1, ThetaHealing, Grandfather, Whispers of the ncients: Native Tales for Teaching and Healing in Our Time, House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic, Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony With Earth Mother, Book 1 (Bk.1), andWay of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives Wong Kiew Kit's books on Chi Kung get into these ideas. Joseph Murphy The Power of Your Subconscious Mind and Neville Goddard's books talk about this with a more Western slant. This book is mind-expanding, well worth it.
