From Scientific American
This superb book will fascinate young explorers, whether or not they are reading yet. The smooth , well-paced text is accessible enough to engage a young listener and simple enough for an early reader. Your scientists will find out that insects are unique among the animals of the world because they alone have six legs. Insects are also likely to have three body segments, wings, and feelers on their heads, and to hatch from eggs. Kids will see an insect that tastes with its feet (a housefly) and one that hears through holes near its knees (a katydid). They will learn that some insects eat by sipping (butterflies), whereas others chew (grasshoppers), such (mosquitoes) or soak up (houseflies) their meals. The concise text conveys a lot of information and never seems too short or incomplete. It is complemented by beautiful, close-up photographs that may make your child ask to bring a magnifying glass on the next foray outdoors.

For Very Young Children Only
By C
This book is extremely basic. I was hoping to use it with early elementary students but this book is not appropriate for anyone over 4 years of age. There was no way to look inside the book before I purchased it and I took a chance. Hopefully I will save someone else from the same mistake. If you are looking for a good guide for children 5 and over, look at Simon & Schuster's Guide to Insects and Spiders or First Guide to Insects by the Audubon Society.

Great for Young Children
By Jacqueline S. Thiel
Insects by Robin Bernard is very simple, accurate, and well illustrated. It is an excellent book for teaching the nature of insects to children ages 3-10. I like the way the text is multi-leveled. The font is large enough for young children and the illustrations are large enough to use in a group.

Excellent for Primary Students

Insects is colorfully written with brilliant real life photos. I love using this as a touchstone text for first graders when they write feature articles. Add this to your science text sets!
