Don't expect to learn any songs with this book. This book is strictly for learning how to sight read, which is a good thing. Every guitarist should learn how to read standard notation and move away from tabulature. This book is good for developing single-note soloing skills, but I think there are better guitar method books out there where you can learn how to sight read while playing interesting pieces that don't sound like simple exercises.

About the Author

Stanley W. Jacob was a professor emeritus of surgery at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. He received his MD from Ohio State University and completed his surgical training at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He was a chief resident in surgery at Harvard Surgical Services and an instructor in surgery at Harvard School of Medicine before he was appointed to the faculty at Oregon Health Sciences University. Dr. Jacob discovered the medicinal properties of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). This discovery led to more than 20,000 publications in such areas as pain, inflammation, scleroderma, interstitial cystitis, arthritis, resistant tuberculosis, cancer, cryobiology, free radicals, stroke, and neuroprotection. Dr. Jacob received many honors during his career and also authored a dozen medical textbooks and more than 170 peer-reviewed articles.

Jack C. de la Torre is an adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Texas in Austin. He began his work on dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the early 1970s shortly after his appointment as assistant professor in neurosurgery at the University of Chicago. Dr. de la Torre’s research revealed DMSO’s ability to quickly reduce intracranial pressure, restore cerebral blood flow, and stabilize respiration in nonhuman primates sustaining lethal traumatic brain injuries. For the next eight years, he extended his brain trauma findings and showed that intravenous administration of DMSO was effective in treating primary and secondary damage following experimental ischemic stroke and spinal cord trauma. Dr. de la Torre has published more than 180 peer-reviewed research articles and written or edited a dozen medical texts on pathology, neurotransmitters, and Alzheimer’s disease.

A solid research summary

A solid summary of recent (and some older) research. Unfortunately the "promise" of DMSO of 40+ years ago has stayed just that as mainstream medicine is not interested in this cheap molecule. Thus the book describes mostly research rather than actual application by doctors. I even have to buy my DMSO from a veterinary supply distributor!

This book represents the lifetime work of Dr. Stanley Jacobs, "The Father of DMSO". Over 60 years of commitment reflected on the pages compiled and completed posthumously on Dr. Jacob's behalf by his colleague and friend Jack De La Torre. Both researchers have produced prolific contributions in peer reviewed literature revealing the promise of this fascinating molecule and it's medical possibilities. This book demonstrates the significant research on this safe, cheap and potent medication. The reader can examine strong evidence for Cancer, Cardiovascular disease, pain management, spinal chord and traumatic brain injury. To read this book one cannot help but being inspired that one day this compound will see the vision of these two authors manifested in standard medical practices.

Great New Book About DMSO for Humans

Great book for the patient, physician, or health care professional that wants to read accurate information regarding the use of DMSO for humans.
DMSO is a FDA approved drug and has been since 1974. Wow you would not know this with its lack of use for the treatment of strokes, the signs and symptoms of inflammation, arthritis, and pain relief to mention just a few of the major ailments it can easily and safely be used for intravenously.

I congratulate the authors for their effort and success in getting this work published.

Fun art with great stories

[[VIDEOID:mo1NZVTNNUQAZV9]]It's great to be back in the world of Toy Story. It's like meeting old friends with that feeling of nostalgia.

There are 176 pages, 16 more pages that previous Pixar art books. You'll see new toys, colour scripts, storyboards, sculptures, sketches and some photographs. Some pieces of art from Toy Story 2 were also included. Many pieces of art are digitally created, which is how it's done these days. It doesn't take away anything though, the art is still good. Colour studies from Dice Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo are beautiful, just like the one on the cover. And so are all the art from other artists.

The writeup is marvelous. There so much more to read compared to previous Pixar art books. I can see Author Charles Soloman has talked to a lot of people and done some good research. The commentary is filled with lots of quotes from the staff, interesting stories and insight into Toy Story. You'll read about the legacy of Toy Story, the updates to this movie, story sequences, the characters and other details right down to how Andy's neighbour decorates his lawn.

For the most part, the commentary is really about the plot and the characters. Nuances and deliberations to every story decisions are explained. Many of the ideas translated to screen are actually from personal life experiences. This film is clearly a piece of love for everyone who worked on it and you'll feel that love and level of commitment on every page you read.

I'm pretty sure this is going to be one of Pixar's most touching film to date.

Highly recommended. It's a great book for all Pixar fans.

The toys are back in town in an incredible making-of book

Many years after PIXAR had made its successful sequel to "Toy Story," rumors circulated high and low that a "Toy Story 3" was in the works. This film at one point was scheduled as a non-PIXAR sequel when Disney and PIXAR had a falling out, but when new leadership managed to bring PIXAR back into the company, PIXAR was able to stop the 'imposter' and resume plans for their own idea.

Charles' Solomon's look into PIXAR is a gem in that during the first pages of the book, it takes fans and readers back, to examine a little of the first two films, before the creative team delves into development of the toy's latest adventure. It is interesting seeing how times have evolved, as on one opening page, we see two color studies. One is from 1994 done in pastels, and one is from 2008 done in a digital paint program.

The book is a trove of color studies, character concepts, clay sculptures, and really gives, to me, one of the most thorough analysis of a PIXAR film in a long time. Some of the making-of books seem a bit hodge-podge, but this has an underlying narrative that gets you into the heads of those at PIXAR, as well as their latest creation.

Not Romance, Fantasy

This was a horrible horrible book. I could not get over the betrayal and the writer really does not adequately IMHO address the issue. I don't understand how the hero could expect girl to forgive him, much less take him back. The only reason the girl would take him back after he slept w/ her best friend, dump her at the alter and make her lose her baby would be if she had no self-esteem of her own. I can understand (though far fetched) her staying friends with this man but to take him back was just too hard to swallow. I would never, even if it was free, recommend this book. It was frustrating and I just wanted everyone in the book to just die. I hated everyone, even the kid!!! Seriously, it was that bad.

p.s. the sex scenes sucked too

DREARY AND DEPRESSING

SPOILERS AHEAD......Basically this is the story of Troy who nine years prior cheated on his fiancée Bree with her best friend Meg. When Meg turns out to be pregnant, he elopes with her and they marry. He only tells Bree after, and then only by phone. By sheer coincidence Bree was going to tell Troy she was pregnant herself. Instead she left town, but lost the baby at three months pregnant.

Present day and Bree has returned home for her sisters wedding. Of course she runs into Troy. Who had lost Meg in a road traffic accident fours years before. But he berates Bree for not attending the funeral. After all both he and Meg had apologised.
Troy never knew about Bree's pregnancy or miscarriage, she never told him.

What a shambolic mess this story is. The reader is never shown anything that happened in the past. All we get are small remembered snippets of conversations. The main story that is set in the present is weak, very little happens. The characters are shallow and self absorbed. I found it very difficult to relate to them in any way. Nothing happens except Troy constantly blames Bree for leaving town, and he can't understand why Bree who was madly in love with him wouldn't want to hang round and watch him play happy ever after with her best friend. As for Bree she should have told him she was pregnant. It might have made this a more interesting tale. And just to top it all off, Bree's father tells her that when Meg got pregnant he was the one who told Troy to marry her. But then as her father was a cheater himself what else can you expect. With family like that who needs enemies.
If I could have given this no stars I would have. First and last read for me by this author. Don't waste your money.

Always a Bridesmaid

It's been nine years since Breanna Parker has been home, but her sister's wedding leaves her no choice but to return to the place where her heart was broken. Troy Youngwolf has never stopped loving Breanna, but a youthful drunken mistake forced him to marry her best friend. Something that Breanna has never forgiven. But he's a widower now with a daughter and he's determined that Breanna give him another chance. Breanna can't wait for the wedding to be over so that she can get out of town as quickly as possible and away from Troy. Although she still has feelings for Troy, she can't get over his betrayal and no matter what he does or how he tries to explain, she simply wants to leave. Preferably before he breaks her heart again.

I have to say, I usually really, really enjoy Elaine Hopper. As soon as this came across for review I wanted it. However Always a Bridesmaid left me feeling more frustrated than happy. I could have easily forgiven Troy his mistake but his late wife was such a cardboard character and the reasons beyond "he was drunk" were never really provided. So I never really felt that the book delivered the character depth that I needed to get past the betrayal and see him as hero material. Especially considering the way he just up and married without giving Breanna any warning. And without that depth I was frustrated by the constant barrage of characters who were on to Breanna to just forgive as if she was somehow in the wrong. Ms. Hopper still can put together a compelling storyline, but Always a Bridesmaid just missed the mark for me.
