Clear and Succinct Resource for Learning the Fundamentals

Introduction to Probability, Statistics, and Random Processes and the accompanying website elucidate the fundamentals. As an introductory and self-study resource, it succeeds quite well. From the prospective of a current math undergraduate, there is often no problem with locating supplementary information (think Wikipedia, which is actually cited in this book) and difficult problems (e.g., MIT OCW). What is, however, harder for us to find is a source that clearly and succinctly teaches the fundamentals of a discipline. That is where this book and website can be helpful.

The embedded solutions and proofs are an especially handy feature of the website. Setting them up in this manner makes it easier to actively learn the material, i.e., attempt the examples and proofs first rather than gloss over the solutions. The site also includes calculators for relevant computations, a comprehensive appendix on distributions, and a collection of video lectures to accompany the first few chapters. Overall, it is an excellent self-study or supplementary resource to use to first grasp the basics. If you want to then examine novel applications, rigorous theory, or challenging problems/proofs, then there's plenty of other free resources available :)

Ideal for seniors and graduate students

I give this book five stars for its clarity and thoroughness. I must say my first reaction was to be surprised at how much better this book is at explaining probability and statistics. On the whole, the writing of the book is rather light and entertaining. For instance, the discussion over convergence and multiple random variables brings a rather complex notion down to something we can identify. Studying this book is ideal for both seniors and graduate students. This book will give all of the students appreciation of all fields actively related to probability and statistics.

The solved problems are very useful. Each non-trivial step in an equation is explained, but not in a frustrating way. There are some problems at the end of each chapter that require deep thinking. However, I think a few more involved ones would be useful. Also, chapter 12 and 13 on the textbook website are very valuable to me in learning simulation using R and MATLAB. These two languages are widely used in my research.

I very much liked the structure of the book

I very much liked the structure of the book. The text is very easily readable and math expressions are clear and comprehensive. Each section includes many examples with solutions, which makes it easier for students to test themselves. Solutions are complete and easy to follow, and steps are well explained.

The book starts with vary basic concepts of probability theory, and covers some higher level notions on stochastic process, and Markov chain. It also has a section on concentration which is very useful. These together with the book webpage which provides examples both in MATLAB and R, make the book a very good fit for an undergraduate level textbook on probability.

Ordering for second time

I love this book! I'm a 4th year medical student and I have 3 other texts on immunology and this is the one that I keep going back to. I loaned it to a friend and it burned in a fire so here I am ordering it again. The text is simple and to the point. The diagrams are suitable and I found them detailed enough. This is my bedtime reading book.

An outstanding introduction to the principles of immunology.

This book, with good color graphics and easy to understand
descriptions of immunological processes, is the best
introduction to the field that I have read. It is clearly
written and all of the information is presented in language
that informs rather than confuses the reader. The
authors do a very good job of balancing the conflicting
demands of scientific rigor and readability. At the end of
the book, I felt that I had a firm grasp of the principles
of immunology and the knowledge to approach more advanced
and technical works. I highly recommend the book to anyone
interested in developing a firm understanding of the basic
science of immunology.

A great introduction to immunology

This book is a great introduction to immunology. Many other immunology books have too much information to absorb, but this book is as brief as possible without sacrificing clarity. I especially liked the review questions and ample references at the end of each chapter.

Amazing

A real gem

I first read this book over 20 years ago, and since then have gone back to it two or three times. Though written as a children's book, it does a great job grappling with some universal and adult issues, namely duty, friendship, loyalty, and mercy -- it seems to plot the progress of a 10th century everyman from barbarism to civilization, and it makes the journey fun and interesting as well. My one gripe would be that Jestyn's transformation from Thormond's thrall to best friend is too quick and total to be believable, but no matter...
i loved this very overlooked book, and have always been amazed that no one ever made it into a movie.

A fast-paced story about the early Vikings

Jestyn was a cow herder with no future until he was bought as a slave by Thormod, a Dane. When they fought together against an enemy, Thormod and Jestyn realized that they would stay by each other side forever. But on arriving at Thormod's homestead, it is found out that Thormod's father has been killed by two childhood friends of Thormod. They had sworn the "Blood Feud" (a fight to the death between two opponents) when their father was killed accidentally. Jestyn decides to join Thormod in this blood feud, which last months even years as their plans are interrupted by their country's war, a long sea voyage and an oath that they would postpone the blood feud. This adventure will take the reader over roads less traveled as they follow Jestyn through Russia and beyond as he seeks to find his true destiny.

She Bop II is an encyclopedic work on the history of women in blues, country, folk, pop, rock, soul and world music. This 2nd edition updates the story until 2001 with major new interviews and an additional chapter on millennial trends like Girlpower, Alanis Morissette and Lilith Fair, soul singers like Erykah Badu and Lauren Hill, plus pop singers like Mariah Carey and Britney Spears.

In the Prologue the author tells of her own introduction to the music world in a girl group in Southampton, England in 1979. They were called The Catholic Girls. Following this, in the Introduction O'Brien details some key changes for women in music since the publication of the first edition of She Bop in 1995.

Based on more than 250 interviews conducted between 1984 and 2001 plus many secondary sources, She Bop is not a simple chronological history but rather an exploration of themes, trends and genres. It looks at how women have negotiated their place in the music industry, the importance of role models and even the internecine rivalry.

It examines the issues that have challenged women from the blues through 1940s swing to MTV at various stages in the development of pop, for example how they deal with stardom, how they negotiate everything from contracts to image, the genres in which women predominate and women on the business side: managers, executives, publicists, journalists, producers and A&R people. In addition, the author discusses women as consumers of music.

The book concludes with 15pp of Notes, a Selected Discography, Selected Bibliography, Index Of Names and Index Of Albums and Singles. There is one color plate with photographs of Madonna, Mary J Blige, Debbie Harry, Billie Holiday, Alanis Morissette, Lauren Hill, Janis Joplin, Britney Spears and Diana Ross, plus many black & white photographs throughout the text.

Because of its length, this is quite a daunting tome but it soon enough becomes an engaging read. There are some factual errors, probably because of sloppy editing (the 6-day War took place in 1967 not 1957) and a few other contradictions often on the same page. Also, O'Brien's feminist theorizing can become tiresome at times, but her knowledge and enthusiasm for the music ultimately make She Bop II a gripping read. It is also a superb reference work.
