Great book! covers eveything

First of all, this book is aesthetically beautiful which is what made me look at it in the first place. But way more importantly, it is excellent for covering everything you need to know for a criminal law course. A lot of students are drawn away from this book and other hornbooks because they are almost the same size as a casebook. Even though its longer and bigger than a glannons or E+E, it covers every subject you will go over in your 1L crim law class. It also gives you the big picture about the revolution of a law, the policy reasons behind it, elements of a rule, factors the court look at, etc. If you have any question about something in class, this book will probably have an answer for you. Another thing that is very useful is that the book does a good job at distinguishing the common law vs. MPC and statutory differences for rules. Since criminal law is such a statutory based subject, sometimes it is difficult to know what rule to use or how to find the majority or minority views, but this book will let you know all of it. I highly recommend it especially if you are interested in going into criminal law or want to know more about it.

Amazing for reviewing for finals

Wow, this book is incredible. Dense? Yes. Difficult and overwhelming? Of course. But it is the most effective and most authoritative book on crim law for a first year law student out there. I read Understanding Criminal Law by Dressler (which probably was the best decision seeing as Dressler wrote my case book) throughout the semester and had a decently solid grasp on the material. But I was by no means confident going into the exam. I picked this hornbook up about four days before the final and literally only studied this while looking at class notes and previous exams sparingly. I was immersed in LaFave's writing and evident mastery of the subject. Some people shy away from the hornbook's heavy in citations and indeed, this one has some pages that are almost entirely citations, but those type of real examples of cases are what help me understand the topics.
After completing the exam I felt awful. I thought reviewing almost exclusively with this hornbook was a terrible idea because my review also encompassed a lot of relearning that could have been better spent looking over the notes and cases I already had instead of typing up new ones into my outline. Man, was I wrong. I got several key ideas from this book that I inserted into my outline when taking the exam and I ended up finishing in the top 10% of this class. Keep in mind, crim was a class I struggled with the entire time. Simply put, this book was a game changer and I highly recommend it to be used as a primer during the semester or just when reviewing for finals like I did. It is no substitute for keeping up with the class material but there is nobody better than LaFave when it comes to crim and it is always helpful to learn from the best.

Helpful hornbook, extensive in coverage

A great addition to the library. Helpful for dissecting and understanding the details of the Criminal Law. There was not a topic that I was unable to find coverage of in this book. Highly recommended as an aid and a reference.

Elaine E. Englehardt is Distinguished Professor of Ethics at Utah Valley University (UVU) with her Ph.D. from the University of Utah. A superb and insightful book. It examines the institution of the American presidency, from the outset to the present, and shows how individual presidents, and historical events, have contributed to the evolution of the presidency.It looks at the president in relation to the Constitution, Congress, the courts, the executive branch, public opinion, the media, and more. In this period of political dysfunction in America, the book offers well-documented facts about presidential precedents that give the lie to opposition attacks and hyperbole, for example, on "presidential overreach." This is a must-read for any serious observer of our system of government. This should be read in concert with The Paradoxes of the American Presidency, by Cronin and Genovese, for a complete understanding of this most-important office.

This is my 3.5 year old sons FAVORITE CHILDRENS BEDTIME BOOK! The "characters" are amazing and make this the best "fantasy"-style children's book yet written. I don't know of any other book quite like it, I have bought several copies because this book makes an amazing gift for friends with kids too! If you enjoy video games or fantasy this is also a great read in general, but I actually don't let me son play any video games, however board games and Magic the gathering cards are common place in our household!

Only problem is...when you are done, you will be drooling for a SEQUEL! Get on it Ben Hatke!

Love for Hatke books remains strong in our house

My 2.5 yr old loves every Ben Hatke book and this one continues the streak. There is always many parts in his books where we can get excited reading together. For this one, we love to count the shields in the dungeon where the goblin lives, we love to say no no no don't chase the goblin on the many pages where he is being chased, we love to point out the dragons and then ask where they went the next time we see their cliff setting, etc. great adventure book with a happy ending and a message of love.

A heart-warming tale for you and your little monsters

If you or someone you know is in the Halloween spirit, plays D&D or simply likes monsters, this book is for you. It's a cute tale about being true to your friends and finding out that everyone's liked by someone.

The art is adorable, with a certain Jim Henson quality to the character designs. The artist knows how to create a scene in every page but makes sure that it's not too cluttered as to distract younger eyes from the focal point of each illustration.

About the Author

Claude Sammut is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales, Australia, and Head of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group. He is the UNSW node Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Autonomous Systems and a member of the joint ARC/NH&MRC project on Thinking Systems. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Machine Learning Research, the Machine Learning Journal and New Generation Computing, and was the chairman of the 2007 International Conference on Machine Learning.

Geoffrey I. Webb is research professor in the faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He has published more than 150 scientific papers and is the author of the data mining software package Magnum Opus. His research areas include strategies for strengthening the Naïve Bayes machine learning technique, K-optimal pattern discovery, and work on Occam’s razor. He is editor-in-chief of Springer’s Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery journal, as well as being on the editorial board of Machine Learning.

The Best Book on Sitcom Writing

I've been teaching sitcom writing at a well known film school for the last six years. During the first five, I used a book, which I won't name, as a way to give structure to the class. Nobody liked it, especially me. It was outdated, dull, and self-congratulatory. So last year I chose not to use a book at all. Things went okay, but there just isn't enough time in the semester to talk about everything in a way that sinks in. As the Chinese say, "Repetition is the mother of learning." There was nothing but their notes to remind students of what I had gone over in class.
No more. Sheldon Bull's book, "Elephant Bucks," is just what I was looking for and didn't know it. Sheldon, a real sitcom pro, clearly outlines what you need to do to prepare to write a sitcom episode, then guides you step by step (and his seven step approach closely mirrors my seven step approach to feature writing) as you write and rewrite your spec script. His examples are helpful and really quite amusing, and his style is lean and to the point. He knows what he's doing.
But there's more to sitcom writing than writing. Sheldon takes you into right into the writers room with practical advice that I wish I'd had before I got my first staff job. I learned a lot of lessons the hard way. Sheldon makes it easy to fit in from the first day.
I'm adopting this book for both my undergraduate and graduate classes. I highly recommend you read this book before you write your first spec sitcom, and, if you've already written one, read this before you submit it anywhere. You'll be glad you did.

THE BEST INTRODUCTION TO WRITING FOR SITCOMS

I was fortunate enough to be a student of Mr. Sheldon Bull. His no-nonsense, realistic approach to the nature of the entertainment industry may not be for everyone, but if you are serious about becoming a television writer and not looking for some magical short cut to success and fame, I can not recommend this book enough. I admit that I was at first skeptical of Sheldon's "seven plot elements." The technique seemed so simplistic and formulaic. But once I started watching my favorite sitcoms with a critical eye I discovered that everything from "I Love Lucy" to "Everybody Loves Raymond" to "30 Rock," follows this exact formula to a T. Sheldon's techniques, lessons and insights, have helped take me from never having written a television script in my life, to having three specs, a pilot, a major contest win, a manager and an agent, all within a year and a half! Of course Sheldon would be the first to say there is no magic bullet for success in Hollywood. There are no talent scouts looking to discover up and coming writers. But this book provides new and experienced writers alike with the knowledge needed to be ready when your opportunity strikes.

A Book About How To Make The Big (Elephant) Bucks

First a disclaimer, Sheldon Bull and I have worked together and we're friends. But that aside, if you want to find out how the TV business works, this is the book you must have in your library. Sheldon has a way of delivering the crucial information you must have to be successful as a writer/producer/director ... and he does it in a personable and often hilarious way. This is not a book about 'theories,' it's a book about experience, facts, and how to protect yourself at all times - because just like boxing, the television business can result in getting knocked around a bit. Do yourself a big favor: If you have any thought of pursuing a career in TV, get Sheldon's 'guide book' and you'll never get lost in the bushes.
