Die Architektur des Ordens passte sich dieser Einstellung zum Glauben an.
Einen einheitlichen Baustil hat es bei den Kartäusern nie gegeben. Vielmehr richteten sich ihre Klöster nach den örtlichen Gegebenheiten. So waren sie in engen Bergtätern länger gestreckt, als zum Beispiel im städtischen Gebiet, wo genug Raum zur Verfügung stand. Die Klöster verfügten jedoch immer über einen großen und kleinen Kreuzgang, einen Kapitelsaal, ein Refektorium, eine Bibliothek und eine Kapelle.
Der Orden der Kartäuser gilt als zahlenmäßig relativ klein, hatte aber gemessen an seiner Größe einen nicht zu unterschätzenden Einfluss. Dabei ist bemerkenswert, dass er nie reformiert wurde und auch weltlichen Einflüssen gegenüber stets unbeeindruckt blieb. Zwischen 1350 und 1550, als immer mehr Orden in ihrer Regeltreue nachließen, suchten immer mehr Gläubige Aufnahme bei den strengen Mönchen .
Das besondere der Glaubensgemeinschaft war ihre Lebensweise. Sie lebten teils zusammen und teils in Abgeschiedenheit. Der Orden geht auf den Heiligen Bruno aus Köln zurück. Dieser brach 1084 mit sechs Glaubensbrüdern auf um sich im Tal von la Chartreuse, nördlich von Grenoble gelegen, niederzulassen und ein Einsiedlerleben zu führen. Fünf Jahre später wurde Bruno von Papst Urban II. nach Rom berufen um dort als Berater zu wirken. Er konnte sich jedoch 1091 wieder in die Wildnis von Kalabrien zurückziehen, um dort eine neue Einsiedelei zu gründen. Erst im Jahr 1115 entstand eine Dritte in Portes nach Vorbild der Ersten. Bis Ende des Jahrhunderts entstanden 37 weitere, sowie zwei Nonnenklöster .
Im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert, dem Zeitalter der Mystik, fand der Orden starken Zulauf, nun auch besonders in Deutschland . Bis zum Anfang des 15.Jahrhunderts entstanden alle 30 deutschen Kartausen. Meist innerhalb der Stadt, oder in deren Nähe, so zum Beispiel in Nürnberg, Köln, Erfurt oder Danzig.

Windy Dryden is one of the leading practitioners and trainers in the UK in the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) tradition of psychotherapy. He is best known for his work in Rational-Emotive Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (RECBT), a leading CBT approach. He has been working in the field of counselling and psychotherapy since 1975 and was one of the first people in Britain to be trained in CBT.He has published over 200 books and has trained therapists all over the world, in as diverse places as the UK, the USA, South Africa, Turkey and Israel.He is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London.
