Great Method for young children

This method presents basic musical concepts broken down simple terms children aged 3-5 can relate to. Concepts are presented with easy card games, simple crafts, silly rhymes, duets and songs and the students keep coming back for more.The children love it They use animals and stories to keep the kids interested and teach to the level of note values. They get the children to practice a little but do not overwhelm them. The children feel successful. Before I discovered this method, I was at a complete loss as to how to teach this age group and usually turned them away. And the best part for me is all the work is done. Well worth the money. I had to initially learn the method, songs, make the games cards but after a couple of hours I was done and now I have a wonderful program to present. I really love how this husband and wife team work so hard to make music fun compared to some books I had to grow up with.

WunderKeys variety is great!

Since I am working with the WunderKeys materials for the first time this fall, I did not know just what to expect. I am finding that the lessons work really well for some students, particularly if I supplement the book material with the extra activities (great stuff) that Andrea offers online. Students who are a bit younger seem to struggle a bit with keeping up and need extra review. The colors, the Finger Friends, and the duets, especially, are really fun for the preschoolers! Great material! I needed to spend a lot of time printing all the "extras" but found the games, etc. very worthwhile!

Wunderkeys is Awesome

I really love the Wunderkeys method. Without it, I wouldn't be able to offer lessons to 3-5 year olds, and lessons for this age group are in great demand! In fact, they make up almost half of my studio. They love Wunderkeys because it's fun, it feels like play-time because of all the games, activities, and "math songs" where they get to use movement, and all of my students have reported to their parents that piano class is their favorite class. Wunderkeys has helped me grow my studio numbers by allowing me to tap into this niche market. While it takes a little bit of prep time to understand how the method works and get the materials organised, it's definitely worth it. I cannot recommend this series enough!

I really enjoyed this book there was some really interesting history as well as some fun tricks to play on your friends or an unsuspecting stranger. As for making money off this as long as your not betting with the wrong person or for stakes that are too high you probably will leave the bar etc...with your fingers intact. And remember, always buy the loser a drink or beer afterward, it spreads goodwill and you just might be able to hustle them again!

A Jewel From Soggy Seattle

Ann Pelo has done a wonderful job capturing her year of caring for a young child, walking through puddles and parks in Seattle and observing nature and human nature. Her book is a great dose of the cure for "Nature Deficit Disorder." Ann's attention to detail reminds me of Vivian Paley's many books honoring the serious conversations and issues we all face, but through the eyes of kindergarteners she taught in the Chicago Lab School. Pelo's Goodness of Rain captures the insight of young eyes opening to the world and respectfully adds her insight and wisdom into ways we may still appreciate the natural world-even in our over-domesticated, city-dwelling lives. This book is a jewel that should stand alongside Annie Dillard, Robert Michael Pyle, Tony Angell, Gary Snyder and other natural history writers comfortable in the Northwest's damp and evergreen landscape.

Excellent quick and detailed overveiw for a north american like me

Also I have some friends who are espanol and some friends from Brazil. Not only are the languages very different but so is the music; anyway my two types of friends refuse to associate if i invite them to my house together so I think Mr Morales may be forgiven for not understanding Brazil. Brazil is a very special country unto itself.

Also I didn't read it for political history or festival information but I learned alot about Caifanes, Mana, Soda Stereo, Cafe Tacuba, Los Tres, even Juanes and La Ley! which was most delightful and unexpected! Did you know Juanes is the son of a rancher?

Gross historical/musical inaccuaracies

First, I am basing my poor review mainly on the sections on Brazilian music, which are a significant part of this book.
Contrary to the Editorial review stating Mr. Morales' "incredible depth of historical and musical knowledge" I found the author's lack of knowledge of some of the more basic elements of Brazilian history and music culture downright ingnorant.
As an example of some of the minute details that may seem insignificant, the famous pre-lenten Carnaval celebrations are not "winter" celebrations since the entire southern hemishphere has opposite seasons from North America. In other more significant areas, the migration of laborers from the north was not due to the "failure of northern coffee plantations" as the coffee regions were all part of southern Brazil. A basic reading of any decent history of Brazil, such as Skidmore's "Five Centuries of Change" would have taken care of such innaccuracies.
Erroneous uses of traditional instrument names and the reference of samba as "a call to wild, mass movement, an (...) of percussion, not the structured rhythmic base for improvisation that came from the fusions of African rhythms and courtly European dances in Cuba...samba is more like 'chaos in tempo'" reek of the typical non-Latin view from insensitive writers who knew little about Latin American culture. It is surprising that a latino, especially in 2003, would be subscribing to the exoticism that permeated the work of scholars (and non-cholars) from the early 20th century.
The author uses no citations, although he does include a rather short bibliography of sources. Perhaps the auhtor should have focused on the music and history of the parts of Latin America that he is more familiar with, rather than attempt to be all-emcompassing at the risk of demonstrating such utter lack of basic historical and musical knowledge of Brazil.

A Broad Overview

This is a good, basic overview of Latin music, heavy on the Cuban/Puerto Rican scenes past and present. It is unfortunately marred by naive, right-wing political comments that fit pretty well into the George Bush I and II's view of Latino realities. But for those 'cumbancheros' who look beyond the politics there is lots of info here. For Cuban music, however, one might be better served by the bargain 'Cuban Music' by Phil Sweeney or by the erudite works by Fernando Ortiz.

About the Author
Paul F. Bradshaw is emeritus professor of liturgy at the University of Notre Dame, an honorary canon of the Diocese of Northern Indiana (Episcopal Church), and a priest-vicar of Westminster Abbey. He has written, cowritten, or edited more than twenty books on the subject of Christian worship, including Reconstructing Early Christian Worship; The Origins of Feasts, Fasts, and Seasons in Early Christianity; and The Eucharistic Liturgies (all from Liturgical Press). A former president of both the North American Academy of Liturgy and the international Societas Liturgica, he was also editor-in-chief of the journal Studia Liturgica from 1987 to 2005.

Informative summary and overview of the key developments

In some aspects this book is a very handy summary of church history, in that it allows one to gain a better understanding of background issues underlying some church conflicts.

Thus, for example, when Arius is in conflict with his bishop Alexander in the fourth century, it is useful to know that a presbyter in Egypt, which Arius was, did not feel his office to be subordinate to that of the bishop and hence was perhaps why he was not willing to back down from his position in deference to "his bishop".

In general I think that Bradshaw represents all sides fairly - particularly in the early period - and I enjoyed his style of writing. Concerning recent developments he really does not engage the various Orthodox churches or those churches who would find little in the Catholic tradition worthy of reforming.

Bradshaw strikes me as very neutral in his discussion and description of developments. I never got the feeling that he is trying to defend some doctrine or development which he favours over another. This is in contrast to some evangelical writers who want to defend the inerrancy of scripture, or some "critical scholars" who are so intent on poking holes in the traditional Christian self understanding that their seeming meta-agenda detracts from the reading of their books.

His discussion of historical developments reflected in various church documents leaves the impression that the New Testament writings would also share this trajectory, i.e. developing over time as sources are reworked which I think that some readers might wish to object to. Also, textual criticism does not enter his discussion in any significant manner that I can remember.

A few more observations: he uses footnotes, there is no bibliography, but there is a five page index, there are a few instances of awkward English usage or missing prepositions in some sentences, and the footnotes are largely accessible to a person only able to work in English though a working knowledge of German, French, and Latin for understanding the meaning of some titles is necessary.

intriguing to the last page!!

My buying guide has always been the description on the back cover, which has served me well and this book is no exception. The author portrays the gentle, caring side of many members of the gay community, but doesn't leave out those less desirable. Nick's warmth and his love of friends are appealing and the playful nature of his online chats is not unlike many I've experienced. The characters are realistic and the story points out the pros and cons of online chats. When Nick meets Brent by accident, it's love-at-first-sight, and anyone of any age who has had this experience will relate to Nick's young-at-heart feelings. The Spanish character Pedro with his endearing dialect is the true star of the story although perhaps unintended by the author, but he's my favorite character! The mystery portion is engaging; the police investigation is riveting and had me turning the pages in anticipation. All of this and the easy flow of the author's writing resulted in a very satisfactory read. I encourage and anticipate the author's next novel!

I love a good mystery book!

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!! Very cool book. It really kept me guessing who did it right up to the end, and the mystery is solved, but with a really interesting end that makes me hope there will be a sequel. I love to read mysteries, and although this author is new to me, I think his writing is great. Kevin's book was a good read. Definitely recommended.

Awesome!

I just got done with this book and I will say that it is a "must" read. I loved every moment. I would tell you my favorite parts in the book but that would be giving away some of the story. The author really knows how to touch your heart and make you feel every moment as it's happening. I really do like Nick. Let's just say it takes him a while like everyone else in the world to find the right guy. I really enjoyed this book and I hope there is a part 2 to it because I really want to find out what happens next. I really hope everyone gives this beautiful book a chance because the author is a great writer and I hope he has a lot more books coming our way.

In the story, Charles Underhill is a widower who will do anything to protect his young son Jim from the horrors of the playground―a playground which he and the boy pass by daily and the tumult of which, the activity, brings back to Charles the anguish of his own childhood. Underhill is caught between his own fear and his sister's invocation of reason and feels paralyzed. A mysterious boy calls out to him from the playground, and seems to know all too well why Underhill is there and what the source of his agony really is. A mysterious Manager also lurks to whom the strange boy directs Underhill. An agreement can be made perhaps―this is what the boy tells Underhill. Perhaps Jim can be spared the playground, but of course, a substitute must be found.

About the Author
Ray Bradbury (1920–2012) was the author of more than three dozen books, including Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, as well as hundreds of short stories. He wrote for the theater, cinema, and TV, including the screenplay for John Huston’s Moby Dick and the Emmy Award–winning teleplay The Halloween Tree, and adapted for television sixty-five of his stories for The Ray Bradbury Theater. A little too close to home...

A great read if you have a cup of hot tea...you'll finish before the tea goes cold. I particularly love Bradbury's description of the Playground, the imagery can almost be smelled and touched. The way he weaves this story is a cultural testimony to American childhood, and to parenthood. And having a young son myself, living not far from several playgrounds, this story hit a little close to home. Unfortunately, living in the suburbs means that the biggest scares for my young kids are not the anguishes of this story, but the fears of plastic swings, splinters from wood chips, and runaway scooters. So, enjoy this taste of Bradbury's best, from the safety of your couch and Kindle.

Hairy scary

I have always loved Ray Bradbury and have never read this short story. I loved it. It was so "Twilight Zone". I read it at night on my Kindle and was a little disturbed/scared with the ending. I wish Kindle had more stories by Ray Bradbury. I would read all of them but maybe not at night.

Great little short story, mysterious and dark. I love Ray Bradbury, great author and great writing, only thing is I kinda saw where this story was going after the first few pages of this short story.. Not really any surprise ending here..

About the Author
Richard Dobbs, James Manyika, and Jonathan Woetzel are the directors of the McKinsey Global Institute, the business and economics arm of the global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

Richard Dobbs, based in London, has led research on global economic trends, including urbanization, resource markets, capital markets, lifestyle diseases, productivity, and growth. He is a coauthor of Value: The Four Cornerstones of Corporate Finance and has taught at the Said Business School at Oxford University.

Dr. James Manyika, based in Silicon Valley since 1994, has led research on the global economy, disruptive technologies, the digital economy, and productivity. He is the author of a book on robotics as well as technical and business articles. He was appointed by President Obama as the vice chair of the President’s Global Development Council. He is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and is on advisory boards at Harvard, UC Berkeley, and Oxford, where he was a research fellow.

Dr. Jonathan Woetzel, based in China since 1985, has led research on urbanization, the global economy, sustainability, and productivity. He also leads McKinsey’s Cities Special Initiative and is cochair of the Urban China Initiative. Disappointingly ordinary in its descriptions

McKinsey seeks to pull together all of the forces that seek to pull apart business strategies. The result is a surprisingly flat description that rehashes past McKinsey research reports than offer a new way to look at the world and the relevance of strategic choices and investments. The four trends are below:

Trend 1: The locus of economic activity is shifting to emerging markets like China, India, Asia and Africa
Trend 2: Technology's impact on the economy is accelerating
Trend 3: Demographics, the aging of the population is shifting demands
Trend 4: Connectedness as trade, capital, people and information flow across national boarders

Each trend is treated in a formulaic way, following a standard structure with slavish adherence. You can extract the books outline which should give you and idea of the limitations of the book's story telling or information value.

Overall, this book is filled with factoids and other little nuggets, many previously published by McKinsey's Global Institute. So if you are looking for new insight, you will not find it here. The discussions of each trend are interesting in their own ways, but the prose is rather bland and expository rather than telling an engaging story that drives understanding or action.

The book's prescriptions are surprisingly simple -- mostly around do better -- rather thank do things differently.

Overall not recommended if you are looking for new ideas. It may be helpful for others to re-enforce their strategic decisions, particularly if those decisions are not too radical.

Ravenna is the main character in Knightfall, a well-written and fast paced tale. As the tale starts, Revenna, an inexperienced druidess, has a nightmare that she has had before. It not only troubles her sleep but also that of her Master druid. For that reason, she is sent on a journey to find others who can tell her what the nightmare means.

Hashaar is a merchant and friend of the people in Revenna's village. He is assigned to accompany her on a dangerous trip that may take a month. As they travel, they find a wild elf who is searching for his kidnapped sister. She was stolen right after his village was attacked by a monster on a horse that leaves no tracks. Ohliaman, the wild elf, accompanies them since they are going his way.

One night, as they stay in a town's inn, a rascal becomes impertinent to Revenna. A dwarf named Bromm comes to the travelers' rescue and has to run with them when things become unpleasant. Soon they discover that Bromm is on a mission of his own. A very special item was stolen from the dwarfs by the same monster who has Ohliaman's sister; so he too joins them. Before they realize where the monster is going, a wizard joins them. Raftennon is most secretive, yet he knows that on Revenna's shoulders rests the future of humanity...if humanity has a future.

I enjoyed this high fantasy tale. It is clean, well done and a page-turner. The characters are well developed and easy to like. The writing is easy to follow and fluid. I recommend it for all from young adults to adults alike.
